~ The Pig is Flying!! ~

 Finally ~
 finished with my hooked rug model for
'When Pigs Fly'

and I have to say, this was a fun hook!

from choosing just the right wools, to using a combination of cuts {#7 - #8.5}
and pulling loops every evening ~
I have loved every minute of working on & hooking this :)

The first loop on this rug was pulled at Sauder Rug Hooking Week,
and I just put the last stitch in the binding this evening.

I love that feeling when a rug is done!

oh how I love to design 'primsical' rugs...
{ok, cross stitch, punch needle, etc.} and this is no exception to that rule ~

remember the background wool?
it is called 'Chocolate Bark Sparkle' from Tow Old Crows in NJ ~
and I did worm-in a bit of black wool to offset the *sparkle* of gold in the Chocolate Bark...

I re-hooked the pig and the broom a couple of times
but I am super happy with it now!

{ the smirk on that pig's face makes me chuckle }

The pattern for When Pigs Fly will be available in paper form and on linen here at the show this weekend, and will also be listed in our Etsy shop next week, available as a PDf pattern too ~
yay!!

I hope you like it ~
 ...on to the next!

~ Saturday Musings ~

 Hello Friends & Folk ~
and happy Saturday to you all!

wanted to show you my progress {or lack-thereof} on my
When Pigs Fly hooked rug....

I've hooked our little witch, and the star to her right ~
the broom and that rascal of a pig!

and can you see the faint *sparkle* in the background wool?
it is called 'Chocolate Bark' and I purchased it from Two Old Crows
 while at the Sauder show last month....it lends a perfect background being hand dyed such a rich brown - to - black color, and those small flecks of metallic gold thread twinkle like tiny stars.
✴✴✴✵✵✵✶✶✶✶✶✷✷✷✷✷✸✸✸✷✷✷✷✷✶✶✶✶✶✵✵✵✴✴✴

I hooked that little swine twice and reverse-hooked it out twice....
finally settling on the wools you see here ~
still need to add a small beady eye and his mouth which I'll 'worm' in between the rows.
Then on to the other motifs, tree-tops, moon and stars & scallops along the top.

 ∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿

our gardens, grass and everything else here on the farm has been growing like crazy...
we have more morning glories than ever...

our mums are ready to burst...

and see that jungle behind our fire-pit?
that was our tomato & pepper patch...
yep.

but it has now become a plot for volunteer sweet annie,
that has grown to over  eight feet tall!
 to the left of the fire-pit is Peter's fig tree,
which has for the first time in three years actual figs on it ~ 6 of them to count.

even the nandina berry bushes
are covered in more berries than we have ever seen here...
I love when they turn red and the cardinals come to snack on them in the snow.

and that big-leafed thing to your left {below} is one of 8 banana trees that we are growing ~
each year we dig them up and store them for the winter, then replant in the spring after the last frost...
and each year, more baby banana trees sprout up from the root system of the more mature trees.

yes, we have no bananas ~ but we sure do look like we live in the tropics!
rain rain, cooler temps and an autumnal feel to the air today.
perfect for pulling wooly loops.
love it!

sending up thoughts of healing
and prayers of relief to all of those suffering in storms
and wild fires in our nation.

~ Getting Ready ~

Good Morning Friends & Folk
and happy Monday to you all!

It is a crisp, overcast and delightful day here at the farm ~
the temps are low, and the breeze brings with it
 the occasional flutter of yellowed leaves which float down
from our many black walnut trees.

a hint of things to come.

I have been gathering fabrics, wools and threads lately
 since I am in full Autumn swing creatively!
I am working on finished goods for our upcoming
Gathering of Primitive Friends Show
{which will be here before we know it}

we enjoy so much
having our friends come out to our beloved farm & shop with us and our vendors....
and we love seeing our vendor friends each year as well!
this year, our list of vendors will include:
Lee & Robin Harrison of Millstone Mercantile
Teresa Miller of Teresa's Primitive Treasures
Dorrie & Susan of Olde Threads
Donna Smith of Southern Star Antiques
Joan Spalding of Olde Rectory Antiques
Becky Carney of A Wing & a Prayer
Jill Bivens of Fat Cat Soap Works
Jack & Kathy Newman of Everlastings
Becky Noland of Lucy Beam Love in Stitches
Kay Werner with her fabulous painted Floorcloths {new this year!}
Kathy Barrick of French Sentiments/Kathy Barrick Designs {a returning friend!}
Kris Miller of Spruce Ridge Studios { new this year & YAY!!!}
and, wonderful food from
The Master's Inn

those of you who return to us year after year will know that this is not a huge event ~
but one more intimate, with invited vendors only...showcasing them & their offerings better
because we believe in the quality of things, not necessarily the quantity.
and, since this is our home, front yard & barnyard that we share with our animal friends,
 we feel it's just nicer for everyone that way ♥

so make some plans to come out to the farm & enjoy yourselves!

here is an applique that I've been working on for the show,
it will be available at the show in the farm shop along with more of my finished folk art ~

I received the model of my When Pigs Fly cross stitch design back from Beth
{ who did another wonderful job }
and will be adding it to our Etsy shop today...
isn't it awesome??
Thank you muchly Beth!

{please overlook the wrinkles, still needs pressed & framed}

I will also be listing the When Pigs Fly Punch Needle pattern, the Owl & Jack pattern,
and our new little wooden sewing clamp:
{ i have to say...I love this handy little thing when I'm punching!}

 Hoping your day is one filled with all Good Things and much creativity ~

~ A few of my favorite little rugs ~

Hello Friends & Folk!
and a Happy Saturday to you!

What a busy week we've had here at the farm ~
...glad to see the weekend come!

and our weather is surely Fall-ish today too
 with temps in the 70's making this farmwife one happy girl :)

I thought I'd pull out my fall rugs in my collection and show them to you {again}...I just love them so much I am thinking about leaving them up here in my sewing room all year long :

 this one below,
was hooked by Sherry Kristoff in 2014....
and I am not sure who the designer is Pineberry Lane.

this one below was designed & hooked on burlap by Bonnie Stahl in 2005
it measures approx. 6.5" x 9.5"

here's one that was hooked by Lori Rippey {below}
in 2013

this one below was hooked by sweet Sandi Lucero!

 a favorite of mine...who doesn't love a chicken?
this rug was hooked by Julie Butler in 2015
:)

another beauty from Sherry Kristoff, love those spicy colors!
Sherry hooked this in 2011

yet another unsigned rug....but it holds my heart!
love everything about this design and the colors used below ~

and one more rug by Sherry Kristoff below:
simple and primitive.

and this is in my hoop at the moment ~
I'm almost finished with my witch's dress, then will move on to the pig....
the name of this is When Pigs Fly and it will be available to rug hookers on paper and on linen soon!
{I promise}

 So my query is this: ....just where shall I hook?
listening to the chickens clucking near the barn?
quietly on the porch in my rocker?
listening to the buzzbee's on the patio near the garden?
or how about the Keeping Room with my classical music playing softly...

....anywhere I choose will be just perfect.

~ Monday Amusements ~

 Hello & Happy Monday Friends and Folk ~
...what beautiful weather we have been having here in our parts of Virginia !

 this,
the last day in July for the year 2017 is what I call a 'sparkler'.
high & dry
comfortable temps
bright sunshine
low humidity & slight breeze.

in another word: Perfect.

I have finished my huge
"When Pigs Fly"© punch needle design....
what a great time I had punching on this between 'other' projects
and preparations for upcoming shows ~

here are a few detail shots first...

hello!
I added a ruched edge of beautiful & tattered silk Sari ribbon,
the shade is named 'coffee', but it has a purple-y/gray-ish/brown color to it and I love how it looks ~
i wonder who lives in my tiny little houses?

{{{{  by the look on Pig's face, he knows he's about to get it good  }}}}

and here is the whole shebang!
look at the movement in my background!
can't you just feel the crisp night air whizzing past these two?

Dear Goodwitch Mary Black...
you should have locked Pig away before retiring for the evening...
~ see what happens when you let a pig play with your broom?
{even the Moon knows the trouble Pig is in when Mary Black catches him}

this piece measures approx. 9-1/2" x16" when finished.
this is - to date, my largest punched piece and I am already designing more.
I hope you love it as much as I do!

the cross stitched version of this same design {with a few minor changes}
is in the hands of one of my talented stitchers, so as soon as I receive it
I will release them both soon as mailed/paper & PDF download ~

 this will also be available as a Rug Hooking pattern,
on paper/mailed/PDF and perhaps on linen {not sure about on linen one though}.

    some of my friends have been seeing different 'things' in the darker background areas of this piece, like black cats and bats....what do you see?
I've also finished punching this little 'Jack Pocket' model for our next
Primitive Punch Needle Club ~ Aug/Sept/Oct '17

members will begin receiving their kits 2nd week of August.

and hello to you too!

~ AND ~

Peter & I wanted to share with you
this fabulous little Sewing Clamp that he made me last night!
{gotta love that man!}

 he made this from our own replenish-able wood
 harvested here on the farm {like all of our wooden products}.

it is simply stained with a black walnut finish, lightly sanded and waxed for a mellow glow....
see how it clamps to my side table and handily-holds my thread spool?

BUT ~ it also clamps on to my Stitcher's Tray!
I placed one of my pincushions on top, and now it does double-duty ~
oooooooh!

and with our brains always thinkin',
we thunk this up:
why not use it to hold my spools of wound DMC floss for when I punch?

so I did and it works perfectly...
first I use my Floss Winder Box to wind my DMC {or other skeined floss}
onto my little wooden spools,
then I place the spool on my new Sewing Clamp
that is clamped on to my Stitcher's Tray....
and there ya go.....

One happy happy happy Wife!

Floss Winder Box shown in Yellow Ochre paint

We think we might just offer these if there is enough interest....
so ~ let us know your thoughts please?

Oh!
I could even design patterns for pincushions for the top too!
hey! cross stitch and punch needle, or wool applique too :)

my happy place.

Wishing you all a *sparkling* day my creative friends!
