~ Diversions & Conversions ~

Hello Friends & Folk!
and a happy Spring almost - April Sunday to you all ~

Yesterday I spent hours charting new designs into my computer software program...
only to have them mysteriously change symbols and colors
when I tried to preview or export the files to PDF.

FRUSTRATING is not even the word to describe how I felt,
so I tried to contact the Ursasoftware Co. to get help...still haven't heard back from them ~

So I called Apple and got the sweetest lady to help me...not that she was familiar with the software program I use for designing cross stitch, but ~ she is a cross stitcher!
... between her helping me with corrupt files and technical-computer-stuff, we chatted about stitching ~ she told me that years ago she even cross stitched a cover for her family bible!
isn't it nice to connect with other lovers of needlework?

After recovering only 2 of my many charted files,
I needed a serious break ~ a Nature Diversion...
so I grabbed my camera and went for a walkabout in the farmyard...

Boy it has been 'greening' nicely with the warmer temps and sunshine...
our sleeping flower friends are waking up!
wild hyacinth and tete d' tete daffodils

aren't the leaves of my snowball bush gorgeous?

love that orange-y center ~

my favorite tiny flower has always been violets...

uh oh!
looks like 'someone' tasted the leaves on this daffy:

aren't they cute....

even our catnip is growing!
Minew and the 'kittens' have already been munching on this :)

after my walk, I still couldn't bring myself to get back on the computer
so I did what I love ~
played with threads and fabrics to get back to my Stitching....

I rooted through some of my linens and have chosen the following
for 3 new upcoming designs for Summer:
left to right they are:
30ct Weeks Dye Works 'Straw'  ~  35ct Weeks Dye Works 'Cornsilk'
and 28ct Picture This Plus 'Wren'

don't you LOVE them?

This project, below ~ is an upcoming Hallowe'en design for 2019:
was started a couple of months ago...then put aside.
it is being worked on 32ct Weeks Dye Works 'Parchment'
with Gentle Art & Weeks Dye Works threads ~

love her little face & feet ~ & oh those colors!

I am keeping this work in progress in my favorite 'Witchy' project bag from Lela Mae Designs ~
here is the link to their Facebook page:

I purchased this bag at last year's PSS Retreat in Lancaster PA
from the Lela Mae booth...of course it had to come home with me ~
it has my sweet friend Lisa Roswell's {the Primitive Needle} "Witchy" design sewn into it...

it is perfect and beautifully constructed ~
love the fabric choice the girls made for not just the outside,...

but the inside lining too!

and the zipper-pull is this tiny arachnid-friend
πŸ•ΈπŸ•·πŸ•Έ

While playing in my Threads ~ I came across 2 conversion charts that I had,
so I copied them and pasted them for you!
~
feel free to save them to your computer,
then you can print them out and keep them in your project bag ~

~ SHOP & STUDIO CLOSED ~

I thought I could do it...
am trying desperately to keep thinking positively about not being sick.
but
holy moly something has me in it's grips!

I swear this is how I have been for the past 3 days:
holding my head,
holding my stomach...
dizzy, lethargic ~
just plain
B L E C H!

 Needless to say,
We will not be opening the Shop nor Studio this weekend at all ~
I need to recover from this, and wouldn't want anyone else to catch this nasty bug.

~ HEY!!!! ~

Howdy friends and folk!
We enjoyed another great Saturday here in the Shop & Studio ~
Always fun to see old friends and love when they pop in for a visit to either shop,
create with us here in the studio...or both!

A while back I had toyed with the idea of holding a mini hook in here in the studio
On March 30th, which is next Saturday...

I never really went forward with it or said anything more about it, but today
a few friends mentioned it and wanted to know if there was an event here on March 30th.

The answer is no, there is no ‘scheduled’ hook in here...
no planned event,
No advertisement or registration for it, no planned lunch or saved spaces ~
BUT
If you’re in the neighborhood on the 30th, and you just happen to have your hooking with you...
By all means come on in and hook with me!

I do apologize if there was any confusion...

We will be holding our Hook In again this year,
in conjunction with our 11th annual Gathering of Primitive Friends show
On Saturday September 21st {with a rain date of the 28th} 2019

I’ll be posting when registration will be open for September ~

Happy Sunday to you all!!

~ Welcome Welcome Spring and a Blessed Ostara! ~

Today marks the first day of Spring ~
the rites of Spring are many & diverse throughout our world,
so I thought I might share some of my personal favorites with you!

~ The Vernal Equinox...
the phrase literally translates to 'Spring's Equal Night',
meaning, on this day the amount of daylight & darkness will be equal
...also, the poles or gravitational pulls of our mother Earth align perfectly, thus,
you are able to stand an egg on it's 'round' end!!
(try it, it's fun!!)

~ Wiccans celebrate the Sabbat of Ostara on this day...
A Blessed Ostara to my Witchy Friends!

And today marks the first day of my Spring Cleaning! YAY!
(( no, really,...I look so forward to this day every year ~ ))
regardless of the weather, the windows of the old farmhouse will be opened,
letting in much needed fresh air in the stale rooms that have been closed up all year.

First ~ I will burn or 'smudge' the entire house with White Sage
to release any negative energies that have gathered
in the house over the past year...

I start sweeping these old floors at the very top of the house,
~  sweeping in every corner, from the ceiling down...
then down the stairs, and finally to the cellar and out the cellar door!

...the windows will be washed with white vinegar & newspaper, inside and out
making our view outside crisp & clear through the old wavy glass.

I will take down the curtains , wash them and hang them in the sun to dry...
bringing in the freshness of a new day and warmth of the sunshine ~

I'm sure you all have your own 'ritual's that you perform this time of year, and I like to look back in my collection of Almanacks for the 'olde time' ways people readied their homes,
farms & lives for the upcoming Spring Season...

 on another note,
I have recipes that I make each year for our family ~
and one of our favorites is
Red Beet Eggs!

~Notforgotten Farm's Red Beet Eggs~
8 hard boiled eggs, shelled
2 cans of red beets + their liquid
1 tbls. pickling spice
1/4 c. sugar
2 cups vinegar
(I like to use apple cider vinegar for better flavor)
In a large glass jar with tight fitting lid, place all ingredients except eggs...
stir and then place in shelled eggs.
refrigerate over night for better flavor, can be kept for 2-3 weeks in fridge,...
(I usually keep adding new eggs once the original eggs are eaten)
...these are great as a side dish or in salad!

another thing I love to do is make these in preparation for Easter:

Onion Skin Dyed SILHOUETTE Eggs ~

Here is how I make mine:
boil 6 large white eggs in salt water (1/2 c. in 4 c. water)
*you will not be eating these!!!*

drain cooked eggs and let cool completely...

in a saucepan, add about 2 handfuls of yellow onion skins (not red onion skins!)
and add 4 cups water...bring to a boil, then simmer...

you'll need some old knee high's or old stockings for the next part...
to make stencils for the eggs, cut our your design from parchment paper...
wet your paper stencil and place on cooled egg...now wrap your egg, covering stencil, with a piece of stocking (approx. 5" x 5" square...) and tie off with a twist tie...
continue to do this for each egg.

now place eggs into dye bath and simmer for at least an hour,
or longer until your desired shade of dye is achieved...
once dyed, let entire pot of liquid and eggs cool completely.
~ now you're ready to snip off your stocking and peel away your paper stencil.
dry each egg with a paper towel, then coat each egg with a light rub of vegetable oil.
this will help 'seal' the eggshell, and make them shine a little...

place eggs in a bowl or straw-filled basket to display...

Eggs like this were made by the PA Germans (and still are!)
and some have even survived over 50 years with careful handling,
being stored away in a cool dark place and brought out again each year ~
BUT
make sure you don't break one of these old eggs
you'll have to evacuate your house if you do!

and to help you celebrate the day, after all of your chores are finished....
here is a little embroidery project that I have previously shared ~

I stitched this using DMC threads ~

all stems ~ 3011 ~ straight stitch
all leaves ~ 832 ~ satin & lazy daisy stitch
bird ~ 647 ~ satin stitch
bird's belly ~ 3064 ~ satin stitch
lettering, bird legs & berries ~ 610 ~ back stitch & french knot

but you may choose whichever stitches/threads or colors you'd like!

Hoping you all have a lovely Spring day my sweet Friends,
no matter how you celebrate!

~ In the Farm News ~

 Good Morning Friends and Folk!
it is a beautifully sunny day here at the farm...
we have been watching our robins, sparrows and bluebirds
flit about gathering tufts of this and that to cozy their nests ~
I always enjoy watching our bird friends.

on a sad note, we had to say goodbye to our 11 year old little-boy parakeet 'Barbara'
who was named by Hannah when we got HIM for her...
{we didn't know 'she' was a 'he' so the name stuck.}
Rest in Peace and fly high little friend ~ we so loved you being here with us...
you will be missed

We enjoyed a wonderful weekend at the Woolwright's Spring Hook In last Saturday!
we were so busy oin our booth that I forgot to take any photos at the show,
except for this one LOL:

Joan and I had to do some retail therapy of course after the show,
you know, to decompress πŸ˜‰

one of my favorite shops to visit while in Lancaster is ~
Hodge Podge
14 East Main Street
Strasburg, PA 17579
(717) 687-8951

a quaint little needlework/antiques shop run by the sweetest lady!

I bought the following linens from there ~

30ct Cocoa from Weeks Dye Works

30ct Tin Roof from WDW

36ct Vintage Sand Dune from Lakeside Linens

30ct Havana from WDW

30ct Straw from WDW
and my absolute favorite of the day that I can't wait to chart a Christmas design for :
28ct Antique Red Gingham from WDW
We also stopped off at a few antiques shops in PA & MD
~ in Maryland at the
Beaver Creek Antiques Market & Shops
here is their link on FB:

I found a bunch of small treasures like this white basket...

two little pincushions and old pail handles from Jimmie Cramer's booth ~

also this sweet basket in need of some tlc...
that I will patch with the old scrap of quilt that I found too!

I love old crochet work too, and found some doilies for a small pittance ~
oh and a little quilted pinkeep too!

yet another basket, this one is in pretty good shape ~

...some of the fabric was gleaned from The Country Store in Lancaster PA,

while the smaller pieces were found in antiques shop booths!

I am always happy to go to a show or travel to teach ~
but coming home with new treasures is the best part of any trip...

Hoping you all have a beautiful day filled with things you love
~ and those who love you most.

Blessings from the Farm
