playing Opossum....

no, your not seeing things....

these are three baby opossums that Hannah & I are holding.
You see,
after our most wonderful shopping & dining date with Lee & Robin,
we were driving back home and came upon a poor Mother Opossum
that had been hit...
she was still alive, but hurt...and her little ones were scattered all over the road...
well, Lee, being an animal lover, pulled over and I, well, being an animal FANATIC,
jumped out & gathered up the ones I could.....
stuffed them into my shirt and climbed back into their car...
AND
then the tears came...
I am SUCH an empath, I can't stand the thought of an animal suffering...
(Lee and Robin, I do apologize for my emotional lack of control!!!)

So,
here we are today...
with three little monkeys.
they are adorable...YES they are!!!!
and I'm trying to feed them with wartmed milk mixed in with a little wet cat food.

IF
there is anyone out there familiar with rescuing baby Opossums,
would you mind helping us out?
they look to be only a couple of weeks old...
we will be calling our local Game & Wildlife Authorities monday morning,
but in the meantime,
we have three darling little lives to take care of.
any help would be appreciated!!

Blessings from the Farm,
Lori

My daughter raised Herman from an in pouch baby.

Try bananas, soft cat food, these were a few of Herman's favorite things.

They also need security, a tail wrapped around something with a pouch to hide in. Herman's favorite place was hidden in Melissa's hair on her shoulder with his tail semi-wrapped around her neck.

When bottle feeding a baby, I find adding raw egg and a tad bit of sugar seemed to help them eat better.

Good luck.

Goodness! Congratulations on your new family members. Wildlife has such a tough time with all our driving around and such. Karmen

My sister raised two orphaned Opossums last year and they still visit her daily after having lived with her for so long.

My sister followed the HOME recipe on this site: http://www.awrc.org/Baby%20Opossums.htm

You can buy Esbilac at most Pet stores.
She also mixed Pedialite or any other electrolyte solution with water. 1/2 cup Electrolyte solution with 1 cup distilled water.LUKEWARM. Just be careful not to give too much at one time.

There are a few sites that can give you home-made food recipes. Google was my sisters best friend! LOL

I'm so happy and thankful you saved them. God Bless.
hugs

Oh, aren't they sweet! It sounds like you got some good advice Lori. Good luck with them. We have a friend here that would take care of little wildlife orphans of any kind until they could be released back into the wild. She even had a black bear cub once.

how sweet, most large pet stores now sell formula that can be used I'm sure.

Hi Lori,
You are just so kind. I do believe we were sisters in another life. Pedialite is good and there are several kitten and small animal formulas available. I use KMR most pet stores have it and the Wal-Mart here has a brand that is good. I wish you and the babies the best.
Take care.

How wonderful that you saved them. You have gotten some good advice. If anyone can save them and bring them along, it's you and Peter and Hannah!

That is so wonderful of you to rescue them. I'd have been right there with you, scooping them up to take home. You seem to be very busy these days with all your animals, and if I lived close, I'd certainly be over to give you a helping hand. Thank you for your caring ways:)
Smiles, Nan

Hey Lori, give me a call 203-881-1986 and I will tell you what to feed them. With babies this young do not feed them too much protein. They need to be started off with fruits and veggies only. I raise these guys all the time. I will explain...Dawn

My old vet told me to mix "calf mana" for babies and use a dropper. Hope it helps! Dawn
