" Widow's Weeds "
designed by Lori Brechlin/Notforgotten Farm

finished size 7.87" x 12.87"
model stitched onto 30ct Old Farmhouse Linen

I was inspired to design a sampler in memory of all of the women before us
who lost their beloved ~
The mis-spelling in this sampler is intentional,
...as are the 'lost' stitches
along the border.
"Widow's Weeds"
is a term used to describe the black crepe clothing that a woman wore
while in mourning for the loss of her husband.
...some wore their widows weeds for the rest of their lives.....
...the basket at the bottom holds weeds the widow may have picked for her husband's grave.
I left two empty cartouches on either side of the basket
for a loved ones' initals.
"Sacred
to the memory of
my beloved who past (passed)
away to (too) soon on the
13 day of June and I shall
wear my widows weeds
untill (until) we meet again"
only 4 colors of threads used ~

I love this! So traditional...even the on-purpose spelling errors. This reminds me of my Italian Great Grandmother, who wore black every day from the time her husband died until she died when in her late 90's. She also wore men's leather house slippers, didn't speak English, and kept her money in a coin purse in her slip. How I loved visiting her!
Lori I love this stitch!!! I can't wait to put my order in for all these new lovely fall stitches you've created!!!
Another pretty sampler....love the interesting designs, can't wait to see what else you have been busy creating !!!
Gorgeous as always!!! Love you Lori!!
