oh the temps have been mild ~ 

and our gardens are now sharing their new shoots & sprouts...rhubarb, parsely & mint...

garlic chives and oregano too!

the barn and farmyard is bustling with new life too...

 Hens are roosting on their nests ~ waiting patiently for tiny hatchlings ~

and I can't wait for little fluffy chicks to come once again.

I am in a chicken mood!

and thought it would be a good excuse to stitch a whopper of a hen...

one who lays dozens of fresh eggs at a time no less!

and happy Thursday to you all...

we woke to rain on our tin roof ~ 

... the sweetest sound imaginable when one's eyes are just opening...

good for our gardens, good for the air - good for this rain-lover's soul.

 I have a new piece of cloth in my hoop today. another beginning, a fresh start.

oh what possibilities it holds ~ and just like a new day, it can be filled with all kinds of things.

I have a design in mind,

for a combination of cross stitch, embroidery and scrap applique all-in-one...

I'm thinking my palette will be blues, browns, old greens, golds and faded whites ~ 

taking cue from my February surroundings, but nodding toward Springtime.

this might turn out bigger than I expected,

mostly because I am excited about this one and anxious

 to be working on my hand dyed Cupboard Cloth {heavily walnut-stained osnaburg} again.

my little stork scissors are very old ~

 I wonder how many times it's tiny beak was used to snip threads over the years?

although they aren't sharp and are not my 'working' scissors,

 I value them for the beauty they add to my sewing basket with their humble patina nonetheless.

a box full of fabric scraps will be my muse for the applique portion of this project ~

saved from numerous works, and just too pretty to toss away...

they will come in handy for a design such as this.

 

and a beautiful fabric covered box is just the place to store them,

don't you agree?

.... dyed some Osnaburg last night ~

I dislike the name osnaburg, ~ so I nicknamed it cupboard cloth.

just love to stitch on this...

embroider or cross

~ it reminds me of old-fashioned seed cotton cloth. 

 

not sure what I'll stitch, 

~ but the reproduction calico and threads will be a part

in my work....

almost forgot ~

I dye my cloth with dye I make 

from our black walnuts harvested in the autumn.

What a crazy-busy moth December is for our family...

online sales, open houses, birthdays & Christmas celebrations surely keep us on our toes!

are we tired? yes, a smidgen, 

~ but we wouldn't want it any other way.

keeping our hands & hearts busy is what we love to do ~

I know how busy you all are too this time of year

with baking, decorating, shopping, cleaning & wrapping gifts...

but please,

make sure you spend some time doing something you love

... a gift just for yourself

I have been designing more hooked rugs lately...

{{ really getting back to my first-love of rug hooking & working with wool }}

and will be offering not only paper patterns {mailed & downloadable}

 but patterns drawn directly on linen for you too!

here's one in progress on my hookinpunch frame,

 a simple design called 

"This Place"

 

a very primitive design ~ and nice size at 13" x 25"

hooked with muted colors and random dark background...

BUT the border will be very different from what I've ever hooked before, 

a super-scrappy hit or miss border using very old looking tones 

of textured wools from my scrap baskets.

 

... you can see I've drawn in my 'squiggle-lines' with my sharpie ~

these are just a guideline for the direction & placement for my rows...

{{ which may or may not change as I'm hooking them! }}

I may try to get a little Frying-Pan Dyeing in this afternoon,

after all of the orders have been packaged & shipped today...

I'll share photos of my dyeing using that method soon...

I'm happy to share my new hand dyed linen with you ~

this is my 'Black Walnut' linen from Notforgotten Farm™

it's much darker & more severely stained than my Old Farmhouse linen,

I was going to show you my "Tobacco Leaf" but that is another new color I'll be sharing in the next week or so, as it is more of an Autumn color :)

each piece of linen is hand dyed & then stained by me, right here on the farm

using my own homemade dyes using organics, spices and naturals...

due to the hand dyeing process - though similar in color, no two pieces will ever be alike.

If you love the look of darker hued antique samplers that have a stained & aged appearance 

I believe you'll love working on this...

just Beautiful ~

our weather has been a delight…dry & breezy & sunny.

perfect laundry drying weather, 

gardening weather and outdoor stitching weather!!

it's so nice to be able to sit & stitch and watch the goings-on here at the farm ~

there is inspiration everywhere in color, sounds & sights.

my kitchen garden is coming along, 

 … need to hoe it, so until I do ~ no pics for you!

but here are a few snaps of the patio plants that keep me company…

and a couple of crawly-friends too:

sleepy striped wasp 

son't know what he is, but this has been a banner year for these striped centipedes!
they are everywhere ~ 

my zinnias need a drink…old rusty planter filled with small petunias

sweet gerbera daisies nestled in an old potty

Lowes had a great deal on these humongous ferns ~ so I grabbed one for 8.00!

i put it in our old coal shuttle ~ i love my woodland ferns :)

some stitching on the patio ~

this is one of my favorite little books on antique samplers

… the small cross stitch I'm working on is on cupboard cloth {my hand-dyed osnaburg}
and will be a sawdust & lavender filled pincushion when finished.

You can find me stitching while waiting for that sunshine to come around the side of the farmhouse

~ so I can dry my hand-dyed linens on the clothesline…

I prefer my cross stitch linen to be crisp when I stitch on it ~

 it softens-up with use and has a nice "hand".

Oh!

I've been experimenting with a new color of linen to add to my

"Old Farmhouse Linen" & "Ironstone" Linen collection ~

a darker brown color, with lots of mottling and age…

 thinking I'll call it "Tobacco Leaf",

 but we'll see.

{{ will show it to you as soon as it's dry & ready }}

Tiny Little Stitches

Hello Friends & Folk ~

it's a little cooler day here today at the farm...but the humidity is still killing me :(
for someone who has pin-straight hair, today mine is looking like a Q-tip.

 completely flerfed & frizzied
(yes those are words...at least in my little world)

I actually don't even have the AC on today ~ giving my electric bill a break...

it's been running non-stop for a week straight, and we don't have central air but wall & window units.

I am really good about not using alot of electricity, in fact, I pride myself in the fact that I have gotten our bill to below $100.00 per month! (not going to be the case for next month's bill, for sure)

So, I have been working on those little stitches that I told you about in my previous posting...

here are a few snaps:

You can see in the photos that I stitched one jack on the lighter side of my linen,
and the other jack is on the reverse, which is stained a little darker

If you have ordered my hand dyed linen from me, make sure you look at each side to decide which is better for your project, the lighter or darker...




I will make the little jacks into tiny round pinkeeps...will show you pics of them once I get more of them stitched up ~
