{ girlhood embroidery }

...gotta love a good read.
or, in my case,
gotta love the books filled with inspirational photographs of early needlework
from the collection of
Betty Ring....

while living in CT, where I grew up,
I was fortunate to find the set of books from a dealer.
the set cost me a mere 30.00
and by today's standards that was a bargain....

I was doing some research on Betty Ring's collection,
and found out that these books are now appraised at over 200.00 each!
a pleasant suprise for sure :)

I stitched this sampler below, back in 1997 using inspiration from these books:

how things have changed!
...do any of you have these books??

  1. $30?!?! Oh lucky you! They have been on my wish list forever. Am hoping to one day come across a set at a used bookstore or our annual library sale ;) Until then I will dream...

  2. I know Patti! but, when I purchased them for the 30.00, at the time, that was alot me us!!! it was an 'investment' (so I told my hubby) and it has surely paid off...in more ways than one :)
Hope you can find some...try Amazon, but sometimes the conditions of the books are not what they're offered as.
    be careful!

  3. I have them and love them as much today as I did when I purchased them a very long time ago. Believe me, I didn't pay just $30.00. Lucky girl!

  5. How fortunate that you got these wonderful books when you did! What foresight! (You can tell your DH that!)

Love that little sampler you stitched. Will you chart it for sale? Hmmm?

  6. My local library has let me buy needlework~quilting books in the past. Those type of books aren't checked out much and they can use the money to buy books that are more current and popular.

    Just an idea....Take Care, Sonja

  7. Pure contentment in the palm of your hands. I can just image you looking through them while sitting on the porch with a cold iced tea.

  13. Oh, lucky you. I have wanted those books ever since I first became aware of their existence. I keep dropping hints to Santa, but so far, they have been absent from his sack. Perhaps this year. Love the sampler you made- very nice.
