~ February Woods ~

Just a bunch of snaps from our walk in the deep woods today ~
temps were in the high 70's and the wind was blowing like it was March...
~ just perfect...

love twisted vines on trees...

shelf lichen reminds me of turkey-tail feathers...

delicate skeletal pods from mt. laurel...

my new kicks ~

old share-croppers house in the woods on our property...

time is taking it's toll ~

beautiful decay...

old tin roofing rusting away...

large holes made by woodpeckers ~

original road to the house still walkable, but is now a footpath.
pinecone

lob-lolly pine

huge twig nest

oyster-shelf-lichen

looks like fuzzy moth-wings

old pail hung in a sapling ~

put there by Peter on one of our previous walks...

reindeer moss

pepper berry

blue-jay feather has pierced through an oak leaf...

our farmhouse, viewed from the top of the ridge ~

interesting tree

worm paths

moss-covered rocks near the spring ~

watercress in the creek bed...

Peter dipping into the spring

more moss with minuscule white and purple flowers

bent by time...

I hope your weekend was filled with many small things of joy!

Thank-you for taking us on a walk with you in the beautiful Virginia woods in February! Oh, how familiar and beautiful it looks to me. The share cropper house is really neat and it would be fun to know about who lived there and the stories of their lives. Are any of the boards salvageable for other projects? I remember those brief and lovely February warm ups before the next blast of Winter. It would be so freeing to be outside with no heavy coat. Not too much longer before the Crocus and Daffodils appear!

Such a treat to see all the gifts of the forest. I use to take my fifth graders on such walks on our forestry field trips. Such wonders and you made us all feel that we were with you.

The most wonderful adventure into your woods, Lori! I LOVED it…to be honest, I NEEDED it…thank you so much. From the lichen to the moss to the dilapidated share-cropper's house….all was beauty. Perhaps I shall try a different path...

Thanks for letting us join you on your walk in the woods. What a way to spend a February Sunday! I spent my day sitting on the back porch and enjoying the birds at the feeders, a nice breeze and warm temps.
Today, it's cold again! Oh, well! that's winter in Eastern NC.!

Enjoyed you're walk photos. Loved the old building. Theres an old homestead along the interstate that ive been taking pictures of since 1973. The barn is down this year but the house is still standing worn and gray.
I always think about the family that lived there.
