{ a Pennsylvania German influence }

....Seems lately
that my work has been more influenced
by my PA German ancestors ~

i'm enjoying making simple fraktur-like drawings, paintings, folk art and needlework...

like the hand drawn note tags and little punched pins that you see here...

my mother's name is Elda Elizabeth Geiste
and she was born on this day in Harrisburg, PA in 1930
(HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOMMY!)

when I was a child,
my mom and her two sisters ~
Aunt Mim (Miriam) and Aunt Dot (Dorothy)
would travel down from CT to PA to visit their cousins...

she would bring us back watermelon candies,
black strap molasses and glass candies...

as I got older, trips to PA became more frequent
and as an adult my love for 'Down Home' (as mom calls it)
 grew in my heart...

I LOVE the Folk Art of the Plain Folk ~
I love the land there,
the people there
and the rich history.
and I. love. the. food.
(OH! the FOOD!)
Scrapple, Cup Cheese, Dumplings, Roastin' Ears, Apples & Ham (Schnitz und Knepp)
Buttered Noodles, Lima Beans ~ oh I could go on....

Wherever we have lived,
our home has always worn a Hex sign or two ~
warding off any evil that may wish to pass our way.

our gardens have always been in raised beds,
and
our clothes are always hung on a clothesline....
pure influences from my mom's side of the family.

Tonight at approx. 6:00 EST
Peter & I will be offering our NEW GOODS in our etsy shop.
you'll see pinwheels and paintings, button boxes and butter paddles,
needlework and wearable folk art ~
all with a nod to my PA German ancestors....

We hope you'll join us!

{ it's just temporary...}

W hat is it that makes us think
...that what we have in our possession
 (at the moment)
truly is 'ours'?

take for instance ~
the needlework samplers that hang on my farmhouse walls:

I aquire them from different sources,
both on line and in shop...
sometimes as gifts from friends who know how I covet them
and some I even make myself.

antique unfinished sampler

same sampler as above, close up ~ bottom line reads: 'her exampler'
what makes me think I own them?
do they not travel through time & space landing in someone's heart for a while,
(hopefully) to be passed to someone else?

I am not the owner ~
...I am the temporary caretaker.

Eliza Chace sampler in wicker tray ~
I want to reproduce this one in blues/browns...
Some of these that I care for are antique,
some made by the talented hands of needleworker-friends...
all are beautiful in my eyes ~

top sampler ~ Carriage House Samplings design stitched by Olde Threads
bottom large sampler ~ antique
sampler to right ~ one of my originals.

some big, some small
some in frames
some not.

some have damage,
others have repairs ~

some come with notes and photos,
most are what I call
"orphans"
~

tiny Memorial Sampler from Kathy Barrick's private collection
 some have thee tiniest stitches,
done 1 thread over 1
with tiny hands
and bright, young eyes...

some made with more experienced hands and tired, old eyes ~
such as mine.
~

Little Brown Dog Sampler ~ a Notforgotten Farm design ~ stitched 1 over one on 40ct linen
 and others,
stitched for pure pleasure and whimsey ~
framed in old frames or new.

top sampler ~ original model by Kathy Barrick
bottom sampler ~ Barb Bobik (Twobirds~Onestone)

Small samplings of linen & thread
that constantly tug at my heartstrings ~
holding precendence in my thoughts and daily routine.

chores first, then onto stitching ~
such as they did hundreds of years ago.

a favorite quote:

God permit industrious angels
Afternoons to play.
~ Emily Dickinson

seeing the past through the eye of a needle....

{ Finished ! }

Here is the finished model for the next upcoming project for our

this design is
"Little Red Schoolhouse"

I wanted this design to carry you back to your days when excitement for going back to school was what fueled your last days of Summer...

remember shopping for new wool skirts and matching knee socks?
or the smell of a new box of crayons ~

I purposely & severely stained and aged this little stitch...
adding holes and scuff marks for a worn primitive look.
(of course you don't have to do as such with your finished work ~ I just like that look)

I mounted the finished sampler to the front of an old book that I had,
that needed a new cover so I chose this brown calico...
a blue or mustard color fabric would look swell too!

...then I added the little button
and a tiny pencil attached with waxed linen cord ~
and the small grubby pencil nub can act as a bookmark as well!

Club Members will receive in this kit:
30ct Old Farmhouse Linen from Notforgotten Farm
DMC Floss to finish project
Antique White Button
(shell, bone or mother of pearl ~ each button will vary due to being antique,
... but all will be antique white buttons)
Length of Waxed Linen Cord
Small Pencil Nub
Finishing Instructions to cover book, attach sampler/button/pencil
Staining/Aging Techniques

Club Memebers will need to supply:
Book - no smaller that 6" x 8"
(can be an old one, new one, blank one or journal ~ your choice!)
Fabric of your Choice to cover your book
( look in your stash for brown calico, or blue, or mustard ~ or whichever you decide!)

Kits for this project will begin being shipped the first week of July ~

If you'd like to join in on the fun, you can click > here  for more info
or email me at not4got@aol.com

I've begun stitching the October/November/December LSHC design already!!
I have been in an Autumnal mood, so this next design will incorporate a more 'Holiday' theme ~
{Think: Santa meets a Turkey + a Pumpkin!!}

Thanks to all for the kind words regarding my book ~ you all mean the world to me :)

{ New Goods, New Book & Picnic-ing Roosters }

Here is a brief preview of our new additions to the
line of wooden needfuls that we offer:

i know...just a tease, and unfinished too!
...but I will be working on their finishes today...
We'll be adding the new items to our
on Sunday, June 30th...in the evening ~
we will have a beautiful Button Box,
a Butter Paddle
(with a little cross stitch pattern for you to stitch and mount to it)
some finished little Framed Drawings
and maybe a Suprise or two!!!

AND
I am thrilled to announce that I have been working with
the Kansas City Star Publishing Company
on a project book!!!

the title of my book is
"Autumn at Notforgotten Farm"
and it includes 8 projects for you ~
rug hooking, wool appique, cross stitch, punch needle and a simple sewing project.
a little something for everyone!!

We're hoping for a release date of September 1st 2013 ~
I am over-the-moon happy, scared, excited and nervous about it,
but working with the wonderful folks at
Kansas City Star have made me feel comfortable....I had NO idea how much work a publishing company goes through to being us such publications....I have a newfound appreciation for editors!!
(Thanks my friend Jenifer if you're reading this!!!)
I'm hoping you will be as excited as I am when it becomes available ~
and I'll be sure to fill you in on more details as I receive them.
(woot woot!)

and ok....
here are some of our crazy roosters:
the BIG black one is our 'little' Toby...
((remember the tiny chick I almost threw into the woods last October? yeah...THAT Toby.)

Toby & two of his brothers ~
Peter & I were eating our breakfast on the patio this morning
and these characters decided to hop onto the picnic table ~

perhaps for a better view?
maybe they wanted their breakfast served there?
or were they merely strutting around on high-ground, better showing themselves off to the hens?
(me thinks all of the above)

maybe they are practicing the Chicken Dance?

well, folks ~
off to 'work' I go....
I will share about the upcoming LSHC project in my next post!

~ wishing you all a creative day ~

MY how times have changed...
now getting ready for back-to-school means new computers, iPads & tablets.
(and I don't mean the kind of tablet you would write on with a piece of white chalk.)

...used to be that a young girl or "Misses"
would need to learn her sewing capabilities before learning her three R's...
being able to adorn her families linens with initials and dates for their household inventories ~
life was so much simpler then.
or was it?

In honor of the schoolgirls' that stitched before us,
I thought a little design depicting an Autumn-themed School house would be fitting
for the next project for our

I'm almost finished with the stitching,
then i will show you the finish...

I think you'll like it and have fun making it!
you will definitely need a book
(that you wouldn't mind covering with fabric)
 that is at least 6" x 8"  ~

 your local thrift shop,
Goodwill or yard sales will yield one for you,
no doubt.

{ Lavender Days }

"There's a few things I've learned in life...
Always throw salt over your left shoulder, keep rosemary by your garden gate, plant lavender for good luck, ...and fall in love whenever you can." ~ from the movie Practical Magic.

Today was our Lavender Wand class ~ taught by Nancy Bauer.
We have been looking forward to this class since February!

nancy brought us all bunches and bunches of her lavender, essential oils and an herbary booklet...

Nancy also brought along some of her herb-infused goodies ~
bacon/lavender mini quiches garnished with pepper-y pansies,
rosemary pound cake with lemon herb butter,
and hibiscus and lavender lemonade...

I baked honey-sweetened blueberry cornbread with lavender glaze,
and made pink lemonade, pomegranate green tea and fresh mint water.

Nancy began our class by telling us a little about the herb,
and showing us how to handle the stems.

...stripping the leaves off the stems makes them easier to manage ~

we bundled & tied up our lavender bunches,
then bent the long stems back over the flower heads ~

"Lavender is for lovers true, Which evermore be faine;
Desiring always for to have
Some pleasure for their paine:
And when that they obtained
have The love that they require,
Then have they all their perfect joie,
And quenched is the fire."~ (Handefull of Pleasant Delites, 1584)

little Minew wanted to come in, but instead Nancy made her a little catnip toy to play with :)

"My dear, have some lavender,
or you'd best have a thimble full of wine,
your spirits are quite down, my sweeting."
~ (A Beggar on Horseback, 1798)

here's what my bundle looks like before weaving...

we each chose a length of ribbon to weave into the stems ~
purple, white, brown & black ribbons were used.

Mr.  Peach came out for a visit,
 and approved of our merry-making..

...here's my finished wand ~
I chose black ribbon.

I'm very happy with the way it turned out ~
so pretty & simple.

Minew approves....

my Thanks to all who came out today & shared the class ~
my Thanks to Nancy who shared her knowledge...

Nancy will be back to teach us how to make wreaths,
...healing salves and sleep pillows!

I'll keep you posted on when those classes will be ~
