{ a Pennsylvania German influence }

 

....Seems lately

that my work has been more influenced

by my PA German ancestors ~

i'm enjoying making simple fraktur-like drawings, paintings, folk art and needlework...

 

 

 

like the hand drawn note tags and little punched pins that you see here...

 

 



 

my mother's name is Elda Elizabeth Geiste

and she was born on this day in Harrisburg, PA in 1930

(HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOMMY!)

 

when I was a child,

my mom and her two sisters ~

Aunt Mim (Miriam) and Aunt Dot (Dorothy)

would travel down from CT to PA to visit their cousins...

 

she would bring us back watermelon candies,

black strap molasses and glass candies...

 

as I got older, trips to PA became more frequent

and as an adult my love for 'Down Home' (as mom calls it)

 grew in my heart...

 

I LOVE the Folk Art of the Plain Folk ~

I love the land there,

the people there

and the rich history.

and I. love. the. food.

(OH! the FOOD!)

Scrapple, Cup Cheese, Dumplings, Roastin' Ears, Apples & Ham (Schnitz und Knepp)

Buttered Noodles, Lima Beans ~ oh I could go on....

 

Wherever we have lived,

our home has always worn a Hex sign or two ~

warding off any evil that may wish to pass our way.

 

our gardens have always been in raised beds,

and

our clothes are always hung on a clothesline....
pure influences from my mom's side of the family.

{ it's just temporary...}

 

W hat is it that makes us think

...that what we have in our possession

 (at the moment)

truly is 'ours'?

 

take for instance ~

the needlework samplers that hang on my farmhouse walls:

 

I aquire them from different sources,

both on line and in shop...

sometimes as gifts from friends who know how I covet them

and some I even make myself.

 what makes me think I own them?

do they not travel through time & space landing in someone's heart for a while,

(hopefully) to be passed to someone else?

 

I am not the owner ~

...I am the temporary caretaker.

 Some of these that I care for are antique,

some made by the talented hands of needleworker-friends...

all are beautiful in my eyes ~

{ Finished ! }

Here is the finished model for the next upcoming project for our

~ Little Stitches Handwork Club ~

 

this design is
"Little Red Schoolhouse"

 

I wanted this design to carry you back to your days when excitement for going back to school was what fueled your last days of Summer...

 

remember shopping for new wool skirts and matching knee socks?

or the smell of a new box of crayons ~

 



 

 I purposely & severely stained and aged this little stitch...

adding holes and scuff marks for a worn primitive look.

(of course you don't have to do as such with your finished work ~ I just like that look)

 

I mounted the finished sampler to the front of an old book that I had,

that needed a new cover so I chose this brown calico...

a blue or mustard color fabric would look swell too!

 



 

...then I added the little button

and a tiny pencil attached with waxed linen cord ~

and the small grubby pencil nub can act as a bookmark as well!

{ New Goods, New Book & Picnic-ing Roosters }

Here is a brief preview of our new additions to the

OLD as Dirt Primitives

AND

I am thrilled to announce that I have been working with
the Kansas City Star Publishing Company
on a project book!!!

 

the title of my book is

"Autumn at Notforgotten Farm"

and it includes 8 projects for you ~

rug hooking, wool appique, cross stitch, punch needle and a simple sewing project.

a little something for everyone!!

 

We're hoping for a release date of September 1st 2013 ~

I am over-the-moon happy, scared, excited and nervous about it,

but working with the wonderful folks at

Kansas City Star have made me feel comfortable....I had NO idea how much work a publishing company goes through to being us such publications....I have a newfound appreciation for editors!!

(Thanks my friend Jenifer if you're reading this!!!) 

I'm hoping you will be as excited as I am when it becomes available ~

and I'll be sure to fill you in on more details as I receive them.

MY how times have changed...

now getting ready for back-to-school means new computers, iPads & tablets.

(and I don't mean the kind of tablet you would write on with a piece of white chalk.)

 

 

 

 

...used to be that a young girl or "Misses"

would need to learn her sewing capabilities before learning her three R's...

being able to adorn her families linens with initials and dates for their household inventories ~

life was so much simpler then.

or was it?

 

 

 

In honor of the schoolgirls' that stitched before us,

I thought a little design depicting an Autumn-themed School house would be fitting

for the next project for our

Little Stitches Handwork Club

 



I'm almost finished with the stitching,

then i will show you the finish...

 

I think you'll like it and have fun making it!

you will definitely need a book

(that you wouldn't mind covering with fabric)

 that is at least 6" x 8"  ~

 

 your local thrift shop,

 Goodwill or yard sales will yield one for you,

no doubt.

{ Lavender Days }

"There's a few things I've learned in life...

Always throw salt over your left shoulder, keep rosemary by your garden gate, plant lavender for good luck, ...and fall in love whenever you can." ~ from the movie Practical Magic.

 

Today was our Lavender Wand class ~ taught by Nancy Bauer.

We have been looking forward to this class since February!

 

 

nancy brought us all bunches and bunches of her lavender, essential oils and an herbary booklet...

Nancy also brought along some of her herb-infused goodies ~
bacon/lavender mini quiches garnished with pepper-y pansies,

 rosemary pound cake with lemon herb butter,

and hibiscus and lavender lemonade...

 



 

 I baked honey-sweetened blueberry cornbread with lavender glaze,

and made pink lemonade, pomegranate green tea and fresh mint water.

 

 

 Nancy began our class by telling us a little about the herb,

and showing us how to handle the stems.

 

...stripping the leaves off the stems makes them easier to manage ~

 



we bundled & tied up our lavender bunches,

then bent the long stems back over the flower heads ~

little Minew wanted to come in, but instead Nancy made her a little catnip toy to play with :)

 here's what my bundle looks like before weaving...

 

we each chose a length of ribbon to weave into the stems ~
purple, white, brown & black ribbons were used.

 



 

 

Mr.  Peach came out for a visit,

 and approved of our merry-making..

I chose black ribbon.

 

 

I'm very happy with the way it turned out ~
so pretty & simple.
