{ Mirror mirror...}

 I got this old oval mirror from Miss Flea a while ago ~
I had it above our mantel, then took it down
and of course now I want to hang it up again...

B E F O R E

 I wanted it more farmhouse-y looking,
so I looked up how to distress the mirror itself to age it a bit ~

Back of mirror

You can see the date is stamped on the reverse:
OCT '43

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I asked Peter to help me with it,
as I haven't ever used muratic acid before and was a little nervous about it~
so we read the directions carefully and began dripping it on the back of the mirror...
bubbles and peeling paint from the muratic acid treatment....
ALWAYS
wear protective glasses & gloves
and
use in a well-ventilated area!
here is our result:
I aged the wooden frame of the mirror a bit more too,
 and tucked in a few of my fav sepia-toned antique photos of
'instant relatives'
mirror, mirror
~ on the wall....
we hung it to the right of the mantel this time,
since our flat screen tv hangs above the mantel now ~
perfect!
it balances the room better and lends more light to the room
with it's reflective surface....
old & worn-looking
it makes me happy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I placed an antique screened pie safe under it
and then put a fabulous white wire/wood
birdcage on top of that ~

inside the birdcage is are more photos,
...some faux greenery and a flicker pillar candle

F I N I S H E D :)

have any of you ever tackled doing a project like this?
I love how it adds a lighter look to our farmhouse ~

Have a beautiful day my Friends!!

That is really cool Lori! I love it and may have to try that on my "winter" mirror....last year I learned how to make glass vases and hurricanes into a mercury glass look...there's a few tricks to it but it turned out great...and beats spending oodles of bucks on the ones on the market...enjoy your new-old mirror :)

So Neat! You are brave. I bought some of that acid once to clean sea shells and the instructions and warnings scared me so much that I returned it to the store. I didn't even care if I got my money back, I just wanted it out of my house. My son was a little guy at the time and I was afraid he'd get into it. He was like that.

We used to rust our tin cut outs with muric acid, that stuff is so strong! Rustoleum has a spray ,I haven't found it yet, that resembles old glass. Funny how some people think we are just nuts to want our mirrors to look old with spots ! After hitting a milestone this year...I Love this kind of mirror !!! Better than Botox !

Oh Lori, it is beautiful!! I love the way it looks now and how you've aged the mirror. The white frame is beautiful and speaks farmhouse so very much. I also love your new vignette with the birdcage and pie safe. Looks fabulous~
