I feel the Earth, move, under my feet....

Robin & I were in Lynchburg today,
shopping in Michaels' and Pet Smart...
we decided to walk over to Barnes & Noble for lunch at Starbucks
and see if there were any new mag's out....
(i got the new Early American Life)

we ate, then went over to the bargain book section,

when I noticed the floor was vibrating.
I looked to my left and saw a man pushing a cart loaded with books and thought,
'...man, that's alot of books!'

then realized that the floor was moving & I could hear a low rumble...
I looked up and my eyes locked with another man standing a few aisles over from me,
and I sort of made a screwed-up face like

'...what the -?'
his eyes said back to me:
'...I dunno...'
then I looked up and saw 'stuff' falling from the HIGH ceiling of B&N
and by now everything was shaking, rocking and was SO surreal ~
and called out for Robin ~
I said,
'OK...we're having an Earthquake, let's get OUTSIDE'!!!

we walked to the front, went out the doors and kinda stood there looking at each other...
more folks came out and we all said
'did you FEEL that?'

oh, yeah,....WE FELT THAT.

an Earthquake, measuring 5.9 on the Richter Scale had hit Mineral, VA.
about 20 minutes from Charlottesville, which is about 30 minutes away from our home...
we were another 50 miles south of that, at least, and it felt like the ground was going to open up and swallow us....

Virginia's last BIG Earthquake was in Giles county, in 1897
and it too, was a 5.9-er.

Robin & I hugged in the parking lot of B&N ~
we were kind of wide-eyed & everything was just.plain.weird.
but we are so happy no one was hurt...

Thankful it wasn't worse.

So,
how was YOUR day???

:)

Blessings from the Farm...
Lori

I could feel the earthquake here in NJ!! We live about 30 miles from NYC -- my husband works there. Buildings were being evacuated and there was a bit of panic with some people -- it being so close to 9/11.

I was sitting in the chair when it started to move, and the t.v. was moving, too. I was so surprised to hear the news alert on the television that an earthquake had hit the east coast!!!

I'm glad you and Robin are safe. I don't know what if any damage was done in the immediate area, but I quickly emailed my friends in Richmond.... have not heard back from them yet.

Crazy!!!!

Lori,
A dear friend in NC emailed me about it and then I turned the news on. So glad you and Robin are ok. My son called and said he felt in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he lives too.

Glad you are ok! We live about 20 miles from Mineral, my husband said the house was really shaking but no damage just a few things fell from shelves and pictures went crooked on the walls. I had just left Michaels and Barnes & Nobles (great minds shop alike!!) and was driving so didn't feel a thing. Hope we don't have any big aftershocks now.

It was indeed a weird experience. I am so glad no one was in our way as we left the building!!!! Hope all was well at your house and that the singing donkeys and dancing sheep were o.k.

Glad you are okay....it is pretty scarey when you are not used to them. I live in California and survived the big Northridge quake in the 90's. I don't care how often we get a shaking, it is very unsettling and it is a reminder that Mother Earth is in charge.

I was sitting in a restaurant on Rt. 30 (Lancaster County) Pennsylvania - when everything started to shake....tables, chairs - very strange feeling - nothing like what you experienced but unnerving just the same. No one knew what had occurred!! We went into a wholesale warehouse and they told us what happened in Virginia...glad everyone is okay!! It was scary enough just feeling the shaking that we felt...I can't imagine how it felt for you!!

I see you got to experiance one of our California Earthquakes. Glad you were OK. You shake for a few seconds and it is over, I'll take one of my earthquakes over a tornado or hurricane and day.

Glad you and Robin are OK. Some people in my office in Hartford CT felt it but I didn't - I was actually in the elevator at the time with several others, and none of us felt it. I wondered how close it was too you. Too scary... be safe.

Glad all is well....It's such a strange sensation, isn't it? We are not in a quake area here at all - but several (many) years back, we did have one and I'll never forget that feeling....Stay safe....Hugs ~ Robin

Glad you're okay. We've had a couple of small earthquakes here in Pennsylvania too...the last one rocked the water in our pool and actually knocked a few things over in my house and off some shelves. Pretty scary! Imagine living in California...no way!! ~Kriss~

Good God, Lori! I saw a clip of a man doing a furniture commercial in VA and things were shaking like you'd see out in CA! Glad you were safe! I didn't feel anything up here in Maine but I know others did. I know we're on a fault line here on the east coast but I hope it doesn't start getting any more active! :-O

Hey Lori,
The girls in Raleigh felt it! I got a text from my husband in all caps saying the house was shaking! Then no service! Pretty freaky. Now we are preparing for Irene. Good thing I'm not suspicious. loved our visit. hope to return soon.

Lori...Thought about you there in VA when I heard the news. Glad the tall shelves in the book store didn't fall on you.
Was everything ok at home? I've heard that animals can since it coming before people feel it.
Didn't feel it here in OH but we had a small one a while back. I remember thinking that someone was lumbering up my deck steps.
