It found me at an antiques shop, and of course, I had to have it for the shop here...

it has a wooden crank handle, and is screened, like to sift something...flour perhaps?

I think it is for flour , My Granny had tons of old farm tools. Its very neat BTW! I know what you mean my sewing machine is smoking I'm in a curtain making storm !

I wonder if it's for some type of threshing for grain...to remove the seed heads like oats or something? It is small, portable, maybe they took it to the fields?? You've given my brain a workout here! I hope an oldtimer comes forth with the real use! It's a great piece! Cathy G
Lori, I have no idea what it is and I thought I'd seen about everything primitive. I'm pretty sure it's a sifter or thrasher of some kind. You just have to let us know when you find out. Good luck on the Primitive Gathering!! I know it's going to be a wonderful event!
What about something to do with dough? Looks like it would be great for mashing dough down between 1st and second rising... crazy idea maybe

Lori, it looks very similar to a very earl sifter I have.. I think some part is missing to help it sit upright (the screened part should be down so you can pour into the opened area)We'll see you next weekend...Blessings from NC Cabin In The Woods

folks, I do believe it is a sifter...the wire screen is SOoooo fine, that I don't think anything but flour could get through it!!!
